Fish oil supplements are mostly Omega 3 poly-unsaturated acids that exhibit known and confirmed benefits to human health, especially related to cognitive function and cardiovascular function. However, their poly-unsaturated character that is one of the main reasons for their health-related performance, is also the reason for their susceptibility to degradation. Degradation of omega 3 PUFAs [poly unsaturated fatty acids] can be described as breaking long chains to smaller fragments, oxidation of double bonds, reduction of double bonds and even creation of new functional groups that are not desired at all for different reasons. Some of the newly formed compounds are smelly ones, like aldehydes and ketones, others are smaller chain saturated acids that have no benefit to human health, while some others can be just unwanted smaller molecules that reduce the composition and overall efficiency of omega 3 acids.

 

Many industrial manufacturers of omega 3 supplements have taken measures and adopted technologies and approaches to reduce the oxidation of omega 3 acids in their supplements. During the last decades a number of steps have contributed to omega 3 resistance to oxidation, and the most widely employed can be summarized as:

-         Initial higher quality of omega 3 fish oils [higher purification steps]

-         Higher quality of first storage [addition of antioxidants, use of nitrogen for flushing]

-         Novel low- permeability capsules

-         Oxygen adsorbents in bottles and bags

-         Semi- opaque bottles and bags [to slow down the light contribution on oxidation rates]

 

 

 

Each of the above improvements was a step towards a superior omega 3 fish oil supplement, driven by the desire for perfection on behalf of the premium brands. We, in MVS- Pharma have been devoted to eliminating the oxidation problem for our customers. We have designed, in-house, a multi-step oxidation defense system that surpasses and outperforms everything that exists in the premium brands market today. Our methodology starts with purchasing only the highest quality omega 3 fish oils, with the lowest p-Anisidine and Peroxide values in the market. Such oils are being purified over multiple purification steps, and are lab certified independently. Our manufacturing process is briefly described as follows:

ü  Low oxygen permeability capsules are being filled by the top professionals in the field, Lonza

ü  Each capsule is then wrapped in our own facilities in low permeability, biodegradable wrapping, for a unique, independent oxidation barrier for each capsule

ü  The required number of capsules is then packed in low oxygen permeability bags or bottles, under an argon blanket. Argon protects the capsules in a far more efficient way than other inert gases, for example Nitrogen, since it is larger, heavier, and slower to diffuse in comparison to Nitrogen, and thus it does not allow any air in contact with the capsules or coming into the bag/ bottle.

 

 

Our approach can be described as ‘going beyond’ what is required to guarantee virtually inexistent oxidation in our fish oils. Starting from the optimum fish oil, the layers of protection that are added make oxidation virtually impossible. In short, our advantages over other premium brands can be claimed as:

n  By adding one more layer of protection, the overall oxidation rates can decrease by up to 80%, depending on the compared commercial product

n  By employing Argon instead of Nitrogen, the user can use the container of the capsules repeatedly, with minor insertion of oxygen into the bag. Even when nitrogen is in the head space, the protection is not comparable; remember, air is 79% nitrogen, thus the mixing of air and nitrogen in the bag headspace is very fast, and oxygen can penetrate the bag. In the Argon case however, only a few ml of air will enter the bag (ideal case just the volume of one capsule being removed)

n  By employing individual wrapping, the oxidation rates can directly be reduced by up to 70%, depending on the comparison scenario
